Is an Electric Chevy Equinox in Your Future?

The 2011 Chevy Equinox

Despite the much hyped upcoming release of the Chevy Volt and a number of auto companies announcing plans to make full-electric models, electric cars still make up a tiny percentage of the overall market. Still, consumers seem to be warming up to the idea of an electric car, and companies like Remy International and AMP Holdings are rushing to provide them with additional electric options.

Remy recently announced it had signed a motor supply deal with AMP to provide them supplied to convert traditional Chevy Equinox models into electric versions of the popular SUV. Of course, this conversion will put the price range out of most consumers' hands, as they expect to sell the electric Equinoxes at $48,000. That'll be a hard sell for Chevy Dealers, whom the company is trying to recruit to distribute them.

Still, the move could help dealers compete with the upcoming release of electric vehicles by competitors like Nissan, who expects to release the Nissan Leaf electric car next year.
